Poe

Luin pitkästä aikaa Edgar Allan Poen novelleja. En ole aikaisemmin lukenut Poeta englanniksi Raven-runoa lukuunottamatta, joten odotin mielenkiinnolla kirjan lukemista, sillä onhan aina alkuperäiskielellä lukeminen paljon autenttisempaa. Lainaamani Poe on nimeltään Stories for Young People, eli tarkoitettu nuorille lukijoille: kirjassa oli kätevästi selitetty vanhoja sanoja.

Oh whither shall I fly? Will she not be here anon? Is she not hurrying to upbraid me for my haste? Have I not heard her footstep on the stair? Do I not distinguish that heavy and horrible beating of her heart? MADMAN!" here he sprang furiously to his feet, and shrieked out his syllables, as if in the effort he were giving up his soul --"MADMAN! I TELL YOU THAT SHE NOW STANDS WITHOUT THE DOOR!" (The Fall of the House of Usher)

The Fall of the House of Usher oli mielestäni vähän liian pitkä ja välillä aika unettava, mutta esimerkiksi The Tell-Tale Heart oli hieno kuvaus hullusta mielestä.

TRUE! -- nervous -- very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses -- not destroyed -- not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? Hearken! and observe how healthily -- how calmly I can tell you the whole story. (The Tell-Tale Heart)

Punaisen kuoleman naamion olen lukenut aiemminkin, se kuvastaa mielestäni osuvasti nykyaikaa, jako rikkaisiin ja köyhiin on vahva. Täällä rikkaissa länsimaissa eletään aika ylenpalttista elämää, eikä muistella niitä, joilla ei ole paljon mitään. Silti loppujen lopuksi kaikki ovat tasavertaisia kuoleman edessä. Tein tästä novellista joskus esseen lukioaikoina, kerrankin oli jotain vähän mielenkiintoisempaa luettavaa kuin ainaiset Aleksis Kivet! :D

Oletteko te lukeneet Poeta?

English translation:

I read Edgar Allan Poe's short stories, it has been a long time since I read Poe the last time. This was the first time I read Poe's works in English (except The Raven) and it was interesting to read the short stories in original language, it's always more authentic. This book which I borrowed from library, is called Stories For Young People, it was good that some old English words were explained with more modern words. I don't read much old English literature so there were many words that were unknown to me.
I didn't like much the books illustration, I would have prefered something more like Tim Burton styled or something else beautiful but dark.

"Oh whither shall I fly? Will she not be here anon? Is she not hurrying to upbraid me for my haste? Have I not heard her footstep on the stair? Do I not distinguish that heavy and horrible beating of her heart? MADMAN!" here he sprang furiously to his feet, and shrieked out his syllables, as if in the effort he were giving up his soul --"MADMAN! I TELL YOU THAT SHE NOW STANDS WITHOUT THE DOOR!" (The Fall of the House of Usher)

I like the atmosphere in Poe's stories though I don't like every story. The Fall of the House of Usher was very long, not my favourite but I did like a lot The Tell-Tale Heart. The Masque of the Red Death was familiar to me, I've read it in Finnish some years ago. I think it's a good description of the modern days, where there's the rich who don't care about the poor. And all of us are equal before death.

I respect those a lot who can write good short stories, it's a difficult task. I just had an assigment in school to write a short story, it was difficult!

"TRUE! Hearken! and observe how healthily -- how calmly I can tell you the whole story." (The Tell-Tale Heart)
